Google’s New Approach to Encouraging Users to Search with AI Overview

Google is aiming to encourage users to utilize its AI Overviews feature through new methods.

The company is testing new capabilities in AI Overview that allow for greater interaction with different parts of the text. When users highlight a section, they are presented with three options: get more explanation about the selected text, perform a related visual search, and copy the text.

This update is a simplified version of previous features, now presented with clearer controls. In the new version, text snippets in AI Overview are more concise, and sources are displayed more clearly.

In earlier versions, selecting a part of the text in AI Overviews would trigger an additional layer of response on top of the existing one. Now, the new buttons seem to offer this experience in a more navigable and organized manner.

This new feature is likely part of Google’s broader changes to its AI-generated responses — including the addition of AI-generated summaries to the Discover feed.
