Comet Browser Unveiled: A Smart Chrome Rival with Perplexity’s AI Search Engine!

Perplexity has introduced a new AI-powered browser built on Chromium.

Perplexity has unveiled a new browser called Comet, which integrates the company’s AI-powered search engine and smart tools. The goal behind designing this browser is to create a seamless and unified web interaction experience.

The current version of Comet is only available to subscribers of the Perplexity Max plan, which costs $200 per month. It will later be accessible to more users via invitation. Comet’s default search engine is Perplexity, which uses AI to generate answers by analyzing results from across the web.

The release of Comet marks Perplexity’s move to compete with Google. The AI-focused company had previously collaborated with Motorola to develop a smart assistant for smartphones.

Comet is built on Chromium, the open-source project backed by Google that also powers browsers like Chrome and Microsoft Edge. During a recent court case involving Google, Perplexity stated that if Google were forced to sell Chrome, it would consider acquiring the browser.

Comet features a smart assistant capable of analyzing on-screen content — similar to what Google offers in Chrome with Gemini. This assistant appears in the browser’s sidebar and can summarize or explain text, as well as perform tasks such as sending emails, scheduling meetings, or even making online purchases.

Currently, Comet is only available on Windows and macOS, and users can transfer their settings, bookmarks, and extensions from other browsers with a single click.
