Runway Will Soon Enable AI-Powered Video Game Creation

Runway, the $3 billion startup best known for its AI video generation tools, is now turning its focus to the video game industry. The company plans to launch AI-powered tools for game development.

According to Cristóbal Valenzuela, CEO of Runway, the company will release an early version of a new interactive AI-based game creation experience to the public in the coming days. This initial version will primarily feature a simple chat interface capable of generating text and images. However, Valenzuela states that full video game creation capabilities will be added by the end of 2025.

He also revealed that Runway is in talks with game development studios to leverage their technology and gain access to their data for training AI models.

Valenzuela believes the gaming industry is in a similar position to where Hollywood was when generative AI first emerged. He noted that while Hollywood initially resisted AI, the technology gradually found its place in the production process.

He mentioned that part of Amazon’s new series House of David was created using Runway’s technology, and the company is now collaborating with “nearly all major studios” and “most companies on the Fortune 100 list.”

Simplifying Game Development with Runway’s AI

Valenzuela further explained:

“If we can help studios make their films 40% faster, we can probably do the same for game developers—help them build games faster. They’ve just woken up to this potential, and in the past two years, they’ve even moved faster than film studios.”

While specific details about how games will be built with Runway’s tools haven’t been released, it seems the company aims to make game creation as accessible and easy as AI-driven video production—allowing even those without technical expertise to participate.

In response to a question about rumors of Meta acquiring Runway, Valenzuela said:

“I think there are more intellectually interesting challenges as an independent company, and for now, we want to stay independent.”
